Event: Cocoon
Artist: Sven Vath
Date: 14 February 2003
Venue: Globe
Star Rating: 4 ½ out of 5
Its like: Kraftwerk on acid
Sven Vath, labelled the godfather of German techno, has been in
the music scene since 1982. He was one of the major players responsible
for bringing techno to Germany in the mid 80's and established record
labels Eye Q and Harthouse in the early 90's. Sven Vath is famous
for mammoth 15 hour sets and is also a prolific producer of high
quality techno.
With all of these credits to his name, Vath is apparently not well
known in Perth. Due to low ticket sales, this event, originally
planned for Metro's, was moved across town to the Globe, and let
us just say, a far better choice for this kind of night. For an
event like this, a more intimate setting was needed to create the
right vibe. Whilst the venue was full, there was still ample room
to dance, a welcome change from the usual overpacked dance floors.
We rocked up at about 1am which meant we missed all the local talent
(sorry guys). We're sure they were all very good. It was cool to
walk up and hear not only pounding tech grooves, but also trancey
sweeps and electronic pulses. Mmmmm, good sign of things to come.
Playing a four hour set, (relatively short for him) Vath never
let our interest wane as he took the crowd on a journey through
many different styles covering tribal house, electro, techno and
lots of cool bleepy analogue sounds. It was an all round well constructed,
seamlessly mixed set which left us never wanting to leave the dance
floor, moving off only for water and fresh air.
The great crowd really completed the excellent vibe. Everyone was
getting into the tunes and the dance floor was going off. It was
great to see all the smiling faces but bottle lids would have been
nice. This was definitely a crowd that was there for the music and
whilst the masses didn't flow through the doors, those that did
go knew that Vath would deliver.
Winding up the night, Puff played a set of slamming techno, the
style that has made him the most popular techno DJ in Perth. Leaving
the die hard dancers begging for more, the night was over and we
all stumbled out into the harsh light of day.
This was a classic night, next stop Ben Sims.
